Docent & Tours

The Mission of the Docent Program is to provide a ministry of spiritual
welcome and information to all who visit The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the
Assumption in San Francisco — a 20th century spiritual, artistic, and
architectural masterpiece.
The former Cathedral Rector, Fr. Patrick J. McGrath (now Bishop of San
Jose), established the Docent Program in 1986 with 16 volunteers. Today, the
program has 73 volunteers, each trained to give public tours.
Just look for us wearing red jackets:
Docents are on duty in the Cathedral from April through October, Monday
through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon, and Sunday after the 11:00 a.m.
Mass. The Docent Program offers three main Programs:
School Program:
For the past 15 years, over 16 thousand elementary school children from
throughout the Archdiocese have participated in a special program. The
children are given a special tour with an organ presentation by the Music
Director followed by a pizza lunch.
If you are interested in a tour, please contact Rosemary Bellan or
Mary Hehir, 415-567-2020 Ext. 207.
Senior Outreach Program:
Senior groups from throughout the Archdiocese are invited for a tour and
organ presentation by the Music Director followed by a catered lunch. If your
group would like to schedule a tour, please contact Rosemary Bellan or Mary
Hehir. This program is not funded and donations toward the cost of the lunch
are accepted.
Special Tours:
This program pairs groups with special interests with appropriate Docents. If
your group is interested specifically in religious art, architecture, group
tours, etc., please contact Lenore Heffernan: 415-567-2020 Ext. 207.
